What are Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE)

Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) are a unique class of materials that combine the elastic properties of rubber with the processing capabilities of thermoplastics. Unlike traditional thermoset rubbers, which require vulcanization, TPEs can be melted and reshaped multiple times, making them highly versatile and recyclable.

How is TPE Processed?

TPEs can be processed using conventional plastic processing methods such as injection molding, extrusion, and blow molding. The basic steps in the processing include:

  • Melting: Granules or pellets are melted at high temperatures, typically in an extruder or injection molding machine.
  • Shaping: Molten film is then injected or extruded into molds or dies to form the desired shape.
  • Cooling: Shaped product is cooled to solidify, after which it can be ejected or removed from the mold.
